Halo and Supernova by Nebular – Olfactory Celestial Phenomena

At the end of last week, I introduced you to the two fragrances, One Galaxy and Aurora, by the niche fragrance brand Nebular; today, we’re continuing right away with Halo and Supernova. As you may recall, this brand is all about the universe – with its seemingly endless expanse – and the fascinating celestial phenomena that take on a wide variety of forms.

Halo – Like an Eye in the Sky

Anyone who has ever seen a glowing ring or arc around the sun or moon is already familiar with the optical phenomenon known as a halo. It occurs when light strikes tiny ice crystals in high cloud layers, where it is refracted and reflected. The so-called 22-degree halo – a bright circle of light around the sun or moon – is particularly common. However, depending on the shape and orientation of the ice crystals, a wide variety of arcs and light patterns can also form. Incidentally, the cirrostratus clouds responsible for this phenomenon can be so thin that sometimes only the halo reveals that they are even present in the sky.

Top notes: Aldehydes, lemon, pink pepper
Middle notes: Freesia, cyclamen, rose, geranium
Base notes: Musk, sandalwood, vanilla, cashmeran

Halo opens with a very bright, clean, and airy scent – thanks to the aldehydes – and truly evokes the image of a radiant light phenomenon. The composition feels ethereal and molecular, carried by citrusy-spicy and soapy-floral facets that make the fragrance appear wonderfully clear and transparent. As the scent unfolds, the Eau de Parfum remains true to itself. Fluffy musk and cashmeran meet sweet vanilla and warm sandalwood, all rendered in a consistently bright and light manner.

Halo is a clean, musky-powdery fragrance with distinct aldehyde notes that, for me, really comes into its own during the warmer months. Then it’s perfect for just about any occasion and, of course, can be worn by anyone.

Supernova – When Stars Outshine Everything Else

A supernova is a gigantic stellar explosion and is arguably one of the most spectacular events in the universe. In a short period of time, so much energy is released that it can at times shine even brighter than an entire galaxy. During the explosion, material is hurled far into space, while – depending on the type of supernova – a neutron star or a black hole, for example, may remain. Incidentally, such events are quite rare in our Milky Way. According to estimates, a supernova occurs only a few times per century.

Top notes: Neroli, orange blossom
Middle notes: gourmand notes, cashmere wood
Base notes: cedarwood, ambergris, musk

Supernova opens with a very sweet, liqueur-like, and woody scent – powerful, expressive, and captivating. Subtle medicinal, saffron-like accents underscore the composition, while creamy floral notes provide a comforting, cozy softness. It continues with a sweet, amber-like quality, fluffy musk, and clean cedarwood. Overall, Supernova gradually becomes lighter, airier, and more transparent, thus reclaiming that typical ethereal Nebular DNA that I’ve already noticed in the other three creations. Given its gourmand-boozy character, I see this fragrance as more suited to the cooler months – and especially in the evening, for going out or for special occasions.
