Delphes – Jean-Claude Ellena’s Tribute to Delphi
Master perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena composed Delphes around a very special ingredient: Olive Grignon Absolue, an extract made from the tree’s twigs, leaves, and fruit. Its scent combines woody, green, and fresh-aromatic notes and is intended to capture the atmosphere of a sun-drenched olive grove. Let’s take a closer look to see if it succeeds.
Top notes: Black pepper, violet leaves
Middle notes: Olive, olive leaves, cedarwood, patchouli
Base notes: Sandalwood, oakmoss
Delphes opens with a fresh, herbaceous scent, featuring tingling, sharp pepper accents and a tart, mineral-like, pleasantly cool freshness. Right from the opening notes, I can picture the sparkling blue of the Mediterranean Sea before me, even though the composition lacks any classic maritime notes. Instead, an aromatic, green landscape gradually unfolds, immediately bringing to mind a sun-drenched olive grove. Patchouli and cedar lend the fragrance creamy, light woody facets and a subtle earthiness that beautifully underscore this image. In the dry down, sandalwood provides gentle warmth and depth, while oakmoss adds dry, mossy-earthy accents and allows the composition to fade harmoniously.
With Delphes, the American niche fragrance brand L’Objet presents a creation that is difficult to categorize. It is not a classic Mediterranean summer fragrance with citrus fruits, herbs, and aquatic-maritime notes, but rather a woody-herbal and mineral-earthy composition that captivatingly captures the characteristic green, slightly tart, and woody facets of a Mediterranean olive grove. Delphes is a pleasant fragrance companion, with a distinctly masculine touch, but in principle naturally unisex and suitable for any season as well as nearly any occasion.
