Gin-Seng and Gothic Incense by The Different Company – Two Extraordinary Extraits Extrêmes

Last but not least, in this third installment on The Different Company’s recently launched Extraits Extrêmes Collection, we’ll focus on the two creations, Gin-Seng and Gothic Incense, with which the line ventures into entirely new olfactory territory: into the green, herbaceous world of botanicals and the smoky, meditative facets of incense.

Two Extrait de Parfums from The Different Company’s Extraits-Extrêmes collection—Gothic Incense and Gin-Seng—float, wrapped in olive-green ropes, against a warm beige background. The black bottles with silver caps add striking pops of color with their vibrant blue and green lettering, lending the minimalist, editorial-style presentation a modern, graphic look.

Ginseng – Asia’s Super Root

With Gin-Seng, perfumer Meng Gu has created a fragrance intended to be “an ode to radical botany and Chinese medicine.” The name itself refers to a key ingredient in the composition: ginseng. For centuries, the root has been considered an important medicinal plant in East Asian medicine and is traditionally used to promote vitality, endurance, and regeneration.

Top notes: Berries, ginger
Middle notes: Chamomile, ginseng
Base notes: Fruity notes, grass, musk

The Gin-Seng bottle from The Different Company’s Extraits Extrêmes collection rests on weathered wood, surrounded by ginseng roots and delicate white blossoms. A gentle beam of light falls from above onto the black bottle with its silver cap and green lettering, highlighting the botanical presentation inspired by Chinese herbal medicine.

Gin-Seng opens with a harsh, herbaceous, and primal character. A wild, dark-green thicket of herbs and grasses, along with aromatic, tart, and medicinal notes, opens the fragrance. This unusual composition, inspired by herbal medicine, feels cool, refreshing, and invigorating. Unconventional and full of character. Gradually, Gin-Seng settles down. Sweet, powdery, and balsamic nuances take the lead, allowing the Extrait de Parfum to fade gently and harmoniously.

Gin-Seng is a creation full of contrasts: stormy and unusual at the start, meditative, warming, and enveloping in the base notes. This Extrait de Parfum from The Different Company has a medium to strong presence and offers impressive longevity. Ideal for anyone who appreciates herbaceous, green-fresh, and unconventional compositions with tart, subtly bitter, and medicinal notes.

Gothic Incense – Filled with the scent of incense

Gothic Incense, too, thrives on contrasts. The Different Company describes the fragrance as a composition “between the city at night, the smoke of sacred woods, and steel.” With this Extrait de Parfum, we find ourselves in a big city at night, where incense fills the air. The precious resin note is not only reflected in the creation’s name but also plays a central role in the fragrance composition. The creative mind behind Gothic Incense is perfumer Serge de Oliveira, who has previously worked for brands such as Sabé Masson, Bon Parfumeur, L’Atelier Parfum, Sensatio Paris, Room 1015, and Une Nuit Nomade.

Top notes: Black pepper, green pepper, green notes, spices
Middle notes: Frankincense, cedarwood
Base notes: Smoky notes, woods, oakmoss, Atlas cedarwood

The Gothic Incense bottle from The Different Company’s Extraits Extrêmes collection sits on a dark surface, surrounded by rising incense smoke and several incense sticks. The black bottle, with its silver cap and bright blue lettering, is set against a deep blue backdrop that underscores the mysterious, mystical atmosphere of this incense-inspired fragrance.

Gothic Incense opens with cool, peppery, and metallic notes. The fragrance is very dry, almost powdery, and surprisingly subtle. Spicy, sharp notes of pepper and a subtle, smoky coolness of incense meet clean, creamy cedarwood, which carries subtly sweet and soft nuances. The composition feels very gentle, meditative, and serene, shimmering silver like bright moonlight on a dark night. Oakmoss brings a subtle, greenish earthiness to the fragrance, which ultimately fades into light woods and a delicate smoky note.

Gothic Incense is not a classic incense scent. Instead of dark resins and sacred opulence, this Extrait de Parfum features cool, metallic, and dry-woody nuances interwoven with delicate wisps of smoke. Calm, meditative, and astonishingly transparent, this creation captivates with a medium-to-strong presence and excellent longevity. It’s just the thing for anyone who appreciates unusual, modern, and rather subtle incense scents with a special twist.
