New York fragrance label Aedes de Venustas takes us on a passionate journey to South and Central America with its latest creation. Destination: tropical rainforests, exuberant vegetation, juicy ripe fruit. From afar, the rhythmic sounds of Latin American music mingle with the scenario – stirring, emotional, full of life. Sueño Latino, as the fragrance is aptly named, is a tribute to this world between the force of nature and cultural sensuality. The composition was developed together with perfumer Gabriela Chelariu.
Aedes Perfumery – From New York to the world
Since 1995, Karl Bradl and Robert Gerstner’s Aedes Perfumery has been the hotspot for all niche fragrance fans and those who place great value on luxurious, exclusive perfumes and room fragrances – presented in a stylish and elegant interior. Initially, the two ran the “Aedes de Venustas” boutique in the famous Christopher Street in New York’s Village. The opulent interior of this perfumery took visitors back to the golden era of yesteryear: opulent chandeliers, antique display cabinets and desks, lots and lots of gold, velvet curtains, in between magnificent green plants and the very protagonists – fragrances and home fragrances – that made the boutique a place of pilgrimage for niche fragrance connoisseurs.
In the meantime, there has been a change of location. The trendy and lively Lower East Side has been the home of Aedes Perfumery for several years now. With the move, the ambience has also changed. The velvet curtains disappeared and the gold is now used more discreetly. The walls in a dark, earthy shade of gray give the place an almost magical touch. It is no coincidence that the Aedes Perfumery is still an absolute highlight for perfume lovers from all over the world.
Sueño Latino – Latin American dream
Aedes Perfumery’s in-house fragrance line is, of course, Aedes de Venustas, named after the original boutique. The name is a mixture of Latin and French and means something like “temple of beauty”. So today’s protagonist is Sueño Latino, the Latin American dream. A quote from Karl Bradl fits particularly well: “A fragrance is ultimately a dream that you experience with your eyes closed”. As already mentioned, the eau de parfum was created by perfumer Gabriela Chelariu. Originally from Romania, she first studied pharmacy and finally came to Grasse, where she realized that the profession of perfumer was her calling. For Sueño Latino, she combined the ingredients bergamot, red pepper, pink pepper, davana, fig, mango, ambergris, guaiac wood, Mysore sandalwood, patchouli, incense, suede and musk.
Immediately after spraying it on, I first notice the greenish-tart freshness of bergamot, which is soon joined by the concentrated power of pepper. The dry, subtly spicy and characteristic nuances of the spice appear almost explosively – and disappear again just as quickly as they appear. Instead, I now perceive the sweet, juicy and gently tart notes of ripe mango, accompanied by greenish-creamy fig. The guaiac wood provides violet-like, powdery-floral accents, accompanied by subtle, smoky-woody notes, in which the incense certainly plays a part. Suddenly, I perceive a slight coolness in the previously rather dense, sultry fragrance. Earthy patchouli and dark suede add further exciting facets to the composition.
The association with the rainforest, with lush vegetation and juicy fruits, damp earth and moss-covered tree trunks is absolutely understandable. Although the creation is less opulent than I had expected – in fact, the fragrance is rather transparent with a medium presence – the individual components are harmoniously combined. I am also impressed by the changeability of the composition. Here, once again, a clear fragrance progression is finally perceptible. The creation of Aedes de Venustas changes noticeably and thus remains exciting and fascinating. Perfect for all those who prefer quiet, spicy-fruity eaux de parfum with a leathery-earthy and powdery-woody finish. A creation for every occasion and, in fact, every season. I love this Latin American dream!
