Let’s get Ice(d) – The cool fragrances from Commodity

Commodity is jumping on the trend for ice-cold fragrance compositions and is presenting three versions of the same concept with Ice(d): Ice(d) as a close-to-the-skin personal version, Ice(d) in the balanced Expressive version and Ice(d)+ as a powerful representative of the Bold line. This may seem a little complex at first, but it follows a clear system.

The US niche fragrance label has always worked with the so-called Scent Space Concept and launches each creation in three gradations. The Personal Collection deliberately stays close to the skin and is aimed at all those who prefer quiet, restrained fragrances with a subtle sillage. The Expressive Collection forms the middle ground – it is the starting point, so to speak, with a noticeable presence and solid longevity. Those who prefer a more intense fragrance should choose the Bold Collection: expressive, long-lasting and with significantly more projection.

Commodity in the fragrance diary

Commodity’s portfolio is extensive and on this blog I have sniffed through and reviewed almost all of the brand’s creations for you. In the following, I will list all my posts so that you can get a comprehensive impression of the brand, its style and the individual fragrance concepts. This will also make it easier to place the new Ice(d) variants in the context of the previous collection.

Ice(d)- | Personal Collection

All three creations in the Ice(d) range are based on a composition of frozen mango, fresh peppermint and aromatic eucalyptus. Depending on the variant, the cool accords reminiscent of clinking ice cubes are sometimes more subtle, sometimes more present. For Ice(d)-, perfumer Caroline Sabas was inspired by an unusual scene: a sudden snowstorm that sweeps across a tropical island – a moment in which heat and cold meet in a surprising way.

Top notes: mango, peppermint
Heart notes: algae, eucalyptus
Base notes: musk, sandalwood, tonka bean

Cool mango meets the fresh clarity of mint and mentholated eucalyptus in the opening of Ice(d)-. Seaweed brings a greenish-salty nuance into play, lending the composition an unusual but thoroughly harmonious facet. As the fragrance progresses, it becomes powdery-crystalline and develops a gently aromatic-woody base. The mango remains present throughout and provides an authentic, tropical fruitiness. Ice(d)- from the Personal Collection is rather light and restrained overall, with moderate longevity. After a few hours, the base in particular is still perceptible on my skin. An ideal choice for anyone who prefers cool, sparkling fragrances for the summer, loves mango and likes it ice-cold on hot days. A successful, pleasantly airy prelude to this new triad from Commodity.

Ice(d) | Expressive Collection

Ice(d) from the Expressive Collection also relies on the familiar trio of frozen mango, peppermint and eucalyptus, but adds the nuances of ginger and black pepper. This makes the composition more contrasting and significantly more present. Within the Scent Space Concept, it forms the center: noticeable, balanced and with a solid persistence.

Top notes: mango, peppermint
Heart notes: eucalyptus, black pepper, ginger
Base notes: tonka bean, ambergris

Greenish fruity notes open Ice(d). Mango, mint and eucalyptus work together very harmoniously here too, although the coolness appears much more subtle and restrained. The composition is fresh, clearly greenish and radiant, with tropical, juicy, slightly sweet mango nuances. As the fragrance progresses, it becomes more fluid and almost aquatic, with facets reminiscent of green tea. Pepper adds dry, spicy accents that further emphasize the freshness. Ice(d) from the Expressive Collection is less frosty overall, but much more present and persistent than Ice(d) from the Personal Collection. A greenish-fresh, sparkling fragrance that works perfectly on warm and hot days. Unisex and versatile.

Ice(d)+ | Bold Collection

Ice(d)+ is the most intense form of the interplay between frozen mango, peppermint and eucalyptus. As a representative of the Bold Collection, this creation stands for maximum presence: powerful, expansive and with pronounced longevity. Bold is to be taken quite literally here. The cool freshness of the familiar trio is combined with a warm sweetness and spicy floral nuances, resulting in another exciting blend.

Top notes: mango, peppermint
Heart notes: eucalyptus, cardamom, rose
Base notes: tonka bean, ambergris

The opening of Ice(d)+ is characterized by tropical-sweet mango, fresh mint and cool eucalyptus – a familiar trio that we already know from the previous two creations. Cardamom soon appears with greenish, spicy facets that further accentuate the freshness. Rose is also present: light, airy and almost dewy, it contributes gentle, slightly sweet floral nuances. The mango is most prominent in this version and is particularly juicy and authentic. As the fragrance progresses, ambergris and tonka bean provide more warmth and depth, with soft, sweet, slightly vanilla-like notes. Ice(d)+ is not an overloaded filler, but a well-balanced composition of exotic, greenish-fresh and spicy-warm notes. More present than the other two variants, with good longevity and yet pleasant to wear – even on warmer days. Unisex and versatile.

Short and sweet: Ice(d) from Commodity

What is the difference between Ice(d)-, Ice(d) and Ice(d)+?
All three variants interpret the same fragrance idea of mango, mint and eucalyptus in different ways. Ice(d)- is the coolest and freshest, Ice(d) is balanced with slightly green and fruity facets, while Ice(d)+ is the sweetest and warmest. The differences therefore lie not only in the intensity, but also in the olfactory weighting.

How long do the Ice(d) fragrances last on the skin?
The durability differs less than one might expect. Ice(d)- from the Personal Collection is a little more volatile and stays closer to the skin. Ice(d) and Ice(d)+ both have solid, quite similar longevity, although Ice(d)+ is slightly more present. The difference here lies less in the duration than in the direction of the composition.

What time of year are the Ice(d) fragrances suitable for?
Thanks to their cool, fresh and sometimes fruity notes, all three variants are particularly suitable for spring and summer, but can also be worn beyond that, depending on their intensity.

Is Commodity Ice(d) a unisex fragrance?
Yes, all variants of the Ice(d) range are designed as unisex fragrances and can be worn regardless of gender.
