Line 618, Remain and Sequence by Amouage – The new trilogy of the Essences Collection

The Essences Collection from Amouage is no longer entirely new. Last year, the Omani fragrance house presented the first three creations in this line. Line 618, Remain and Sequence were recently followed by another trilogy, which is the focus of today’s article. The collection is characterized above all by an unusually elaborate production process. The perfume oils are first stored together with Australian sandalwood chips for six months, while the alcohol used matures in French oak barrels at the same time. Only then are the two components brought together – a process that is intended to give the fragrances additional depth and a particularly smooth structure.

Line 618, Remain and Sequence form a new trilogy within the Amouage Essences Collection. Three fragrances that each embody their own idea of time and movement – and yet are linked by their extraordinary production methods.

Line 618 – The harmony of the golden ratio

The name Line 618 refers to the so-called golden ratio, a proportion of 1.618, which has been a symbol of harmony and balance since ancient times. This mathematical constant appears again and again in art, architecture and nature: in classical buildings, in the composition of famous paintings – such as Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa – or in the proportions of many natural forms. The ratio of the golden ratio is perceived as particularly balanced and aesthetic. The composition of Line 618, created by perfumer Nathalie Lorson, seems to be based on precisely this idea of balance, structure and fine tuning.

Top notes: incense, black pepper, pineapple, peach, plum
Heart notes: pine, heliotrope, coconut, milk
Base notes: patchouli, sandalwood, guaiac wood, leather

In the opening of Line 618, cool incense meets the spicy heat of pepper and fruity facets before the composition transitions into a wonderfully soft creaminess. An enchanting melange of milky nuances, heliotrope and sensual sandalwood meets clear pine notes, powdery, floral guaiac wood and velvety, light leather. I think you can tell: I am thrilled! Line 618 from the Essences Collection by Amouage is a beautiful, smooth and harmoniously composed woody-creamy incense fragrance with a subtle fruity undertone. Absolutely unisex and wearable for almost any occasion. Very elegant, modern and sophisticated, yet meditative and calming. A composition that lives up to its name and makes the idea of harmonious proportions olfactorily perceptible.

Remain – The scent of the moment

Remain means something like “stay” or “linger” and plays with the idea of a single moment, a point in time that neither pushes forward nor back, but stands still. Or, as Amouage itself puts it: “A single point – the origin, the pure potential, the spark from which creation emerges.” Perfumer Pierre Negrin was responsible for the creative implementation and created a composition that interprets this idea of a moment of pause in olfactory terms.

Top notes: incense, mandarin, allspice, bergamot
Heart notes: lily, ylang-ylang, juniper, jasmine
Base notes: ambergris, guaiac wood, patchouli, vanilla, tonka bean

Spicy nuances, citrus fruits, incense and juniper open Remain with powerful, liqueur-like and beguiling notes reminiscent of pickled fruits, the finest spirits and exquisite spices. This atmospheric and present opening is accompanied by creamy accents that I would attribute to lily, ylang-ylang and jasmine. Ambergris and guaiac wood bring balsamic, powdery and ambery facets to the composition, which are rounded off by the gourmand spiciness of vanilla and tonka bean.

Remain from the Essences Collection by Amouage is a warm, spicy-amber fragrance with creamy floral facets and a gently gourmand base. Presence and longevity are outstanding and always balanced. The composition is at its best in the cooler months of the year or in the evening, when its balsamic warmth and liqueur-like spicy nuances come into their own.

Sequence – movement and continuity

Sequence means “succession” and thus refers to movement and continuity – to the constant flow of time in which one moment brings forth the next. While Remain stands for the still moment, Sequence takes this idea further and describes the transition from a single point to continuous movement. Perfumer Julien Rasquinet was responsible for the olfactory realization of this concept.

Top notes: lychee, raspberry, saffron
Heart notes: rose, osmanthus, tonka bean
Base notes: eaglewood (oud), leather, ambergris, woods

The opening of Sequence is intensely fruity, sweet and leathery-woody, a profound blend from which raspberry, leather, oud and saffron in particular can be sniffed out. The sweet and sour, bright fruits form an exciting contrast to the dark spice, wood and leather notes. Rose and osmanthus lend lightness to the composition and prevent the creation from appearing too heavy or even overloaded. In the base, the fragrance gradually becomes warmer, softer and calmer. An ambery blend of oud and leather with creamy wood accents finally brings the creation to a close.

Sequence from the Essences Collection by Amouage is an intense, fruity, leathery oud fragrance that combines sweet and sour berry facets with dark woods, spices and a gentle warmth of ambergris. Presence and longevity are convincing in this composition. Sequence is also a creation for cooler days and is more suitable for the evening or leisure time than for the office.
