Today we are devoting ourselves to D:SOL MMXVI, a label that deserves much, much more attention in my eyes. Because the brand’s creations are simply amazing. I have already introduced you to the brand itself and the four eaux de parfum Herbes, Tesoro, Terram and Sombra in my article D:SOL MMXVI – Between Berlin and Mallorca. The first two are particularly appealing to me, as they exude that inimitable Mediterranean vibe of aromatic herbs, tangy citrus fruits and sunny summery facets that instantly put me in a vacation mood. I have withheld one fragrance, Cistus, from you, but I promise I will catch up with the review. Today I would like to start with the latest creation from D:SOL MMXVI: Isleta.
D:SOL MMXVI – Mallorcan longings
D:SOL MMXVI stands for a minimalist, Mediterranean fragrance philosophy that translates the lifestyle of the Spanish coast into wearable art. The brand was founded in Spain in 2016, inspired by the sun, wind, salty air and the barren yet fascinating landscapes around the Mediterranean. The label focuses on minimalism in design and composition: clear lines, minimalist flacons, complex and finely balanced accords.
Each fragrance tells the story of a place or moment: Herbes, for example, captures the notes of a Mallorcan herbal schnapps, Tesoro shines with citrus fruits, flowers, spices and leather like a summery dream, Terram smells earthy, woody and warm like warmed rocks and macchia, while Sombra carries animalistic, distinctive and smoky nuances.
The brand attaches great importance to balance, naturalness and Mediterranean authenticity. All creations are unisex, often with aromatic herbal notes, citrus fruits, mineral or woody facets that immediately evoke associations of sun on the skin and a refreshing sea breeze.
Isleta – Small island in the Mediterranean
The name Isleta translates as “small island”. It remains unclear exactly which island D:SOL MMXVI had in mind here. But it must have been an incredibly relaxed, laid-back atmosphere that the label had in mind, because it is not for nothing that it describes the fragrance as a “daydream in summer”. Perfumer Michael Nordstrand was responsible for the creative realization of Isleta and combined the ingredients bergamot, floral notes, mandarin, juniper, clary sage, jasmine, fig, white tea, patchouli, sandalwood, amyris and cabreuva.
Michael Nordstrand is an independent perfumer and artist with a deep passion for raw materials and their stories. He has trained at Givaudan’s Perfumery School, ISIPCA and The Grasse Institute of Perfumery. His style is characterized by exceptional creativity, respect for natural raw materials and a clear, reduced composition that emphasizes the character of materials without overloading them.
At the heart of Isleta is one of my favorite fruits in fragrances: The fig(Ficus carica) is an ancient cultivated plant of the Mediterranean and is considered a symbol of fertility and abundance. Its large, deeply incised leaves exude an aromatic green, slightly milky scent when rubbed, which is often used in perfumes for a creamy green freshness. The sweet, juicy flesh complements this greenish tartness with a warm, soft facet.
Isleta – my olfactory short vacation
Isleta starts the fragrance with a citrusy-tartness and wonderfully greenish-creamy fig notes, which I really like. It’s exactly to my taste. The eau de parfum is clear and fresh before sweet floral nuances and tangy mandarin gradually flow into the composition. Juniper brings sparkling, woody facets to the creation, accompanied by the aromatic notes of clary sage and the greenish water accents of white tea. A delicate coolness pervades the fragrance, like a gentle breeze coming from the sea and carrying the sound of the waves. Isleta is not maritime, but for me it just exudes this wonderful Mediterranean vibe, this summery freshness that is so enchanting. In the finish, the eau de parfum becomes a little warmer, sunny and powdery-woody, accompanied by a subtle earthiness that rounds off the greenish fig notes very successfully.
Bright, transparent, Mediterranean – for me, Isleta has everything my olfactory heart desires. I love fig scents, and this creation by D:SOL MMXVI is exactly to my taste. Minimalist, clear and light, Isleta is not only the perfect summer fragrance for all lovers of fruity-green compositions, but also for those who like relaxed and carefree eaux de parfum with a medium presence and just as much longevity. I think I have found a new favorite fragrance for myself. An absolute recommendation from me! Isleta is an olfactory summer dream!
